Hi ninjas Cross-posted from DoWire and other E-democracy lists. Note that Auckland/Wellington are on Steven's list. Might be an opportunity for a genuine unconference on OpenGovt if someone local wants to pick up on the opportunity.

Kevin Curry and others including myself are putting out the word to
gather interesting in a "CityCamp" world tour of unconferences at the
intersection of local Gov 2.0, transparency, and citizen
participation. The initial Chicago CityCamp attracted a dynamic mix of
people coming from e-government, social media, civic engagement,
digital inclusion, software development perspectives, etc. - a truly
cross-cutting, silo busting group of participants.
If you want a city in your country (there is some special interest in
developing countries) on the prospecting list, it is important to say
something now.
A great way to stand up and be counted is to join the main CityCamp
Exchange online group and post to this topic:

Join the group from:

You can also contact Kevin Curry directly: <email obscured> - See
his note below.
E-Democracy.org will be doing all it can to support these important
convenings and continue to support the main online exchange among
participants. I encourage other organizations to step up and
contribute as well.

Subject: [CityCamp Exchange] City Camp World Tour?
To: <email obscured>
City Campers,
Over the past several months I've fielded many questions about when and
where the next City Camp will happen. City Camp
DC - http://barcamp.pbworks.com/CityCampDC - already happened. As a
result of those questions - and some convincing by a
handful of you - I've started thinking seriously about the answer(s).
In a nutshell, I'm thinking about a City Camp "world tour" starting in 2010
and continuing through 2011. I've been in contact with potential local
partners in Philadelphia, London, and Edmonton. Additionally, I've be asked
about feasibility of conducting City Camps in developing nations: Africa,
India, Indonesia. The Code for America cities make sense, too.
Ultimately it will take committed, local partners to determine where City
Camp World Tour (CCWT) will land. I'll need help finding facilities,
caterers, sponsors, and most importantly: local government participants.
So, I'm appealing to you all today for help finding those local partners.
Based on highly scientific research I'm most interested in these cities:
Boston
Boulder
Philly
Seattle
Washington, D.C.
Miami
Austin
Atlanta
New York
London, UK
Helsinki, Finland
Mumbai, India
Ahmedabad, India
Kigali, Rwanda
Nairobi, Kenya
Johannesburg, South Africa
Manila, Philippines
Bangkok, Thailand
Edmonton, Canada
Galway, Ireland
St. Petersburg, Russia
Auckland or Wellington, New Zealand
(Australia)
(Mexico)
(Central/South America?)
Here's a map view:
http://explorer.arcgis.com/?open=16fd2c7c307248aeb8cc11b62c8ccc74
But I'm open to working on a City Camp wherever I can find a local partner.
Please contact me directly ff you are interested in becoming a local
partner and are confident that you can handle the responsibility. Please
also share this with your other networks.
Thank You,
Kevin

I'd like to see a different location, not a city, to encourage a different mix of people. Somewhere like Coromandel or Waiheke Island, which in my mind have more grassroots interest. Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone On 21/07/2010, at 7:44 AM, <email obscured>"

It looks as though the hosting account has been suspended so I can't read about exactly _what_ a city camp is all about :-/ In terms of people having more interest I'm not sure that that is correct. Just look at the people on this list who live in cities. We may not get out and protest as much but I deeply care about my city and what happens to it.

Hey all, here is the online group (on GroupServer too!): http://forums.e-democracy.org/groups/citycamp Our webhost messed up of billing apparently ... referring URLs should be back working shortly.
I've put my hand up to help out in Auckland. Problem with trying to do it outside the big cities is that broadband is often poor and so I'd suggest a better connection is probably more important for them first. Agree ALGIM conference might be useful but it depends if we want grassroots people involved or if we're focusing on getting local govt onboard. My view is that a workshop or fringe event might work there but citycamp should be kept separate.
ALGIM is probably a good 'target' for open data. Maybe we should try for some involvement at this years conference in November? It would be good to get a speakers spot and also maybe have a breakout session on open data. Glen On 22/07/2010, at 8:39 AM, carol.hayward wrote: > I've put my hand up to help out in Auckland. I normally go to that, I could front if people want. Or help with a joint effort. Regards Mike On 22/07/2010 9:00 a.m., Glen Barnes wrote: > ALGIM is probably a good 'target' for open data. Another thought, ALGIM is for the IT side of local govt. Many of the people are operational. ALGIM conference is always held in Wairakei. Strategically, it would be better to engage with SOLGM, which is the business side of local govt. SOLGM conference moves around, this year its in Queenstown; which probably puts it out of reach of most of us.
