Finally! We announce the BarCamp that was discussed at GOVIS. My
apologies for the delay and my thanks to Rowan Smith for prodding me
into action.
As yet, we have no venue but have 2 options being explored, and no
date, but are looking at mid- to late- August (venue-dependent). It will
be a weekend event, with talkfest on day 1 and hackfest on day 2.
The tagline for the event is: "When we have access, we can make stuff
happen"
What we're hoping for is a bubbling up of ideas and understanding that
will result in 2 or three solid projects that we can get stuck into
making happen on day 2. We're looking for a range of people from
business heads to solid geeks who have an interest in opening up
government data and making use of it.
We're not looking for a bitch session about the stuff we can't get at -
we want to know about the stuff we can reuse, and the ideas people might
have on how to reuse it. One brilliant outcome would be a simple list of
all the data feeds and sets available at present, or a list of the stuff
we'd like to see available so that those agencies can be approached, the
sort of stuff Nat and Glen are collecting on http://opengovt.org.nz.
We're looking for business cases to put to agencies, wish lists for
applications, discussions around privacy, policy and process and all the
usual BarCamp stew!
Mike Riversdale has created a Google group at:
http://groups.google.com/group/nzopengovtbarcamp so come along and sign up.
When we know more detail, you will know it too.
My thanks so far to Rowan, Courtney Johnstone, Natasha Lampard, Mike and
Jane Harris for putting up their hand to kick things off. We're by no
means an exclusive group - the more the merrier.
Remember: 1st rule of BarCamp - DO talk about BarCamp. Tell your
friends, email your colleagues and tweet your fellow avians - get your
pet peeve about government data and what you think should be done about
it and bring it along.
Cheers
Mark Harris
Camp Wrangler (gee thanks, Nat!)
Mark
That is great. NZOSS supportive as is Catalyst IT.
Can I also suggest that the topic is raised at the Software Freedom Day
Town Hall event. This year tagged for Sunday 20th September.
Rest of post
Cheers
