Just read today that our CRIs are using open source software to make their data more accessible. Lowering costs to government FTW. http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/open-source-front-end-for-environmental-data There's a brief mention of a workshop on the 22nd at the end of the article. Does anyone have a link to the details?
Hi Tim, This is described here: https://www.seegrid.csiro.au/wiki/Siss/SissWorkshopNZ2011 The workshop is a cooperative venture between NIWA, GNS & LCR with the Geospatial Office facilitating, bringing the speakers in from Australia. The following two days are discussing time series data management, discovery & delivery, with a focus on the OGC Sensor Observation Service: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/sos http://www.csiro.au/sensorweb/au.csiro.OgcThinClient/OgcThinClient.html Unfortunately, having helped organise it, I'm going to be away at sea from tomorrow so will miss it...

Just to say that we already use a fair amount of Open Source software including Geonetwork Metadata, Map Server, Postgres/gis and so on. The key point here is our focus on Open Standards such as OGC SOS. Ditto Landcare - we are using postgres/gis, mapserver, geoserver, geonetwork, openlayers, and qgis and R (statistical computing and graphics) as desktop applications. We are deploying web services based on open standards; WMS are already available, WFS coming soon and behind the scenes we are experimenting with web processing services (WPS) for data analysis. S-map online (smap.landcareresearch.co.nz) is one example of an application built entirely on an open source stack.

To add to Andrew's comment, our mantra when building the http://www.os2020.org.nz portal was "Open Source; Open Standards; Open Data" Only Open Source gave us the flexibility & portability we needed to implement a system compliant with the appropriate industry standards to deliver a truly Open Data provider.

And a bit political, but pretty much on topic: The Green Party has had an enlightened (my choice of adjective :-) policy about open source, open standards & interoperability in Govt computing for some years. As far as I'm aware this election is the first time one of the two big parties has actually mentioned Open Source as a serious policy item. Described: http://www.zdnet.com.au/nz-labour-reveals-ict-manifesto-339324411.htm Actual document: http://blog.labour.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ICT-policy.pdf Of course, the relevance of these documents post election is always questionable :-)

Here's hoping that the SOE's have the same type of enlightenment! (Not holding my breath though.)
