Hi all, A small number of us have been invited by the NZ Geospatial Office* to a session with them to discuss open data issues and opportunities. NZGO decided they were more comfortable with a smaller group of people they already knew, rather than an open invite. They've said this is the start of a conversation rather than an end, and they seem really open to larger sessions in the future if that's valuable. We're meeting with them on the 2nd of March, in Wellington and via phone conf from Auckland. Representing you at this meeting are: - Don Christie - Gavin Treadgold - Glen Barnes - Laurence Millar - Michael Wood - Nat Torkington - Robert Coup - Tim McNamara The purpose of the meeting is to: "meet, learn who we are, what we are doing/planning, how New Zealand Geospatial Office could support activities to make government more open, and explore areas of mutual interest. Other potential topics of discussion/interest include: development of openstreetmap, standards, New Zealand Geospatial Office's relationship with Land Information New Zealand and facilitating engagement with Land Information New Zealand, etc." Please let any of the above people know if you have any questions you'd like raised at the meeting, or just post questions under this thread on the email list. We'll write up and posting a report on the meeting. Jim, Has anyone generated notes from this meeting? > Apologies, I had intended to do a proper writeup but the meeting happened only 7 days after the christchurch quake. Although I did make it to the meeting, my life has been an insane turbulence of trying to get back on top of things ever since. So, this one fell through the cracks (pun intended).

Session with Open Data Community and NZ Geospatial Office, Wednesday 2 March 2011. LINZ, Wellington Attendees: Don Christie (Catalyst IT); Gavin Treadgold (Kestrel) Geoff O'Malley (NZGO); Glen Barnes; Joe Hedditch (LINZ); Julian Carver (Seradigm); Keitha Booth (LINZ); Kevin Sweeney (NZGO); Mary Sue Severn (NZGO); Michael Wood (Map Sport NZ); Laurence Millar (GVG); Nat Torkington; Richard Murcott (NZGO); Tim McNamara. Discussion points: * the separate worlds of officials and open community bridge occasionally only * Noted upcoming Net.hui * Outline of work/focus of NZGO, particularly showing progress on delivering spatial data infrastructure (for Ministerial report-back due Mid-2011). Key focus on providing metrics that demostrate the value of opening government held information and improving (re)use of this information * Earthquake Recovery Map - officials struggling with the divide between official data and data sourced from the crowd * "government has to get out of retailing information and into wholesaling information" (thanks Laurence!), i.e. government spends less effort polishing data and focuses on providing raw/machine readible data * Local government to change perseption of data from project expense (a cost that needs to be recovered) to an asset that authorities needs to investment along side other provision of other infrastructure Action(s): We need to keep the conversation going/keep the door open NZGO committed to engage with Open Data Community

Well done Julian for getting these done. Other subjects that we touched on were: - the links between open data, open standards, open source and open communities - the value to government officials of live examples where geo-data has been used (helps in telling stories to Ministers - with tangible results) - NZGO plans to increase resources levels during 2011 - Mary (mislaid her surname) who is in charge of Research at NZGO is looking for ideas collaborative research projects. Previous thining was collaboration between government/Private Sector/Universities and CRIs, but NZGO are realising that there is a community sector that could add a new perspective and some unique value.
