giving a public lecture at VUW on the 28th June which you are all very welcome
to attend. Here is his biography and the topic of his presentation:
bio:
Mr Tumin has served widely in government, industry and research institutions.
He began his service as a policy analyst for the Mayor’s Office of Management
and Budget, City of Boston. He later served as as Special Assistant and Chief
Policy Analyst to District Attorney Elizabeth Holtzman of Brooklyn; as Chief,
Information Services Division, New York State Organised Crime Task Force; as
Director, Division of School Safety for the New York City Public Schools; and
Director, Financial Services Technology Consortium. Throughout, he has held
positions at the John F. Kennedy School of Government as Research Fellow; as
Executive Director, Leadership for a Networked World Program; and now as
Associate Director, Programs in Technology, Networks and Governance, at the Ash
Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. Mr Tumin is the author of
numerous essays and 25 case studies focusing on technology, networks and
governance. Zach graduated with a BA cum laude from the University of
Pennsylvania and holds Master’s degrees in Education, and in Public Policy,
from Harvard University. His book with former NYPD and LADP Chief William J.
Bratton, “Collaborate or Perish,” will be published by Crown/Broadway Business,
a division of Random House, in 2011.

In today’s world, no one can go it alone: the problems and opportunities we
face easily overwhelm the hands we are dealt. Our best hope is collaboration,
doing together what none can do alone. In this shared-mission, cross-boundary
age, technology is great, and networks invaluable; they make collaboration
possible – ours, and our adversaries’ and competitors’. How can we turn our
assets to our advantage, immobilized as they often are in the iron-bound world
of legacy systems and organizations, or emerging rapidly in the networked world
of digital bits and bites, and assure prosperity, safety and welfare?

Dave,
Most of the speakers will be decided on they day, if you are able to attend and
pitch an interesting topic then you could present. I know you are CHCH-based,
but we are recording the sessions and we will make them available after the
event.
There will be a couple of speakers from government agencies that are giving
more traditional talks, and the panel discussions, but the rest is unscripted.
BTW - it is not really a _Microsoft_ event, we are one of the sponsors, but
there a few sponsors, and some more that need to be added to the site.

I asked via Twitter for an invite and tried to sign up. Since I do open
government stuff on my own dime (like most people on the list I'm guessing) I
can't really afford another trip to Wellington but I did ask if Microsoft could
sponsor me...
I'm keen to present on how we can use open data to make money and reduce costs
- Something that would probably be well suited to a more 'commercial'
unconference.

Thanks for the clarification, Mark.
I guess I couldn't help noticing the fact that MS and partner provide
the commercial representation on the "expert panel." (is the image
gallery askew in anyone else's browser, by the way? W3C validator shows
lots of errors)
This isn't really appropriate to this list, but to explain my perhaps
unexpected (to those who don't know me) incredulity at the decidedly
Microsofty vibe for this "unconference":
It just feels like a pre-emptive strike to me, given that Microsoft is
desperately trying to hold on to its juicy gov't contracts worldwide,
and hates being outflanked by self-organising bunches of principled
(mostly) open source do-gooders that seem to be springing up all over
the place and starting lists like this one - which are influencing
*real* change in gov't.
Forgive me if I'm cynical, but MS have a LOT to lose if they're not seen
to be leading this, despite the fact that not even the best PR firm in
the world could make them *actually* open (even though they haven't
given up trying - new tack: redefine word "open").
MS want to keep the playing field well and truly slanted in their
favour. Which is also why they started the NZICT Group (whose leaders
happily brag about their access to ministers when lobbying on behalf of
foreign multinationals on issues like software patents).
