The same technique could be used to visualize crime statistics, immigration, anything cyclic. I'm learning more about the Sunlight Foundation folks, hoping to speak to the Director this week to figure out the method to their madness :). At first blush, they seem to be a lot more about one-off projects, whereas MySociety seem to work hard to build on-going sites that deliver on-going value. I could be wrong. The Transparency Corps is interesting but there's lots of room to improve it (e.g., in the area of how you reward contributors with feedback and leaderboards and so on). I've just asked Adrian whether they plan to build an open source project around it, or simply do a one-off release of the source code to fulfil Knight Foundation funding.
