Perspectives on the 2010 Budget

A panel seminar with Dr Geoff Bertram, Shamubeel Eaqub and Brenda Pilott

Dr Geoff Bertram was until June 2009 a Senior Lecturer in Economics at
Victoria.  His research interests include regulation of public utility
industries such as electricity, gas and telecommunications; economic and
political development of small island societies with a particular focus on
the Pacific; the design of policies to address climate change; and the
long-run evolution of the New Zealand economy.  He has over 100 publications
including more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and book
chapters. He speaks regularly at international conferences on energy,
climate change and small-island issues.

 Shamubeel Eaqub, Principal Economist, joined NZIER in April 2009 and heads
up membership services. He is deeply passionate about macro economics, the
New Zealand economy and sharing both with the wider community. He is
responsible for economic forecasting at NZIER. Shamubeel holds a Bachelor of
Commerce and Management with Honours in Economics from Lincoln University.
He has worked as a macro economist in the private sector since 2001, both in
New Zealand and Australia. His focus and interest is in analytical
frameworks to aid economic forecasting, commentary and incisive research
into topical areas of economics.

Brenda Pilott is national secretary of the Public Service Association, New
Zealand's largest trade union. Prior to joining the PSA in 2004, she was a
public servant for 11 years, working mainly in social policy, including 5
years as General Manager Policy at the Department of Child, Youth and Family
Services. She was Women's Refuge national coordinator for four years. A
qualified librarian, Brenda Pilott worked in libraries in local government
in New Zealand and the UK and at the Parliamentary Library.

This seminar is jointly presented by the School of Government and the
Institute of Policy Studies, Victoria University of Wellington and the
Institute of Public Administration New Zealand.
