what are we plotting here?
My take is that we want to get better value out of governnent data - data that we pay for, and for the nost part is tied up inside government organisations, and occasionally let our for controlled outings on web sites that are mainly underwhelming. With the mass labour they enjoy in the US, they have created http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Open_Up_Government_Data, which brings together ideas, data and advocacy. Here I think our short term aim is to get a repository of exsting government data that is "in the wild", build awareness (big ups for Computerworld this week), and start an advocacy forum (what data would we lke to release. My long term vision is for a big mashup of government data, geo-coded, that illuminates our country and our social fabric Nat posted a link: http://flowingdata.com/2009/06/23/20-visualizations-to-understand-crime/ NZ is a well placed to bring such intiaitvies together in one space.
Hiya, One of the things we've learnt from the DigitalNZ experience so far is not to be too picky about the completeness of the data. As far as first steps go, getting the data out in any format is the most important thing. Developers can then usually find a way to make it work. For example our geo-data needs a lot of clean-up (something we're working on) but that hasn't stopped people from making geo-mashups. As an aside, DigitalNZ has an established API infrastructure for the sharing of content-related data. If any govt agency was looking for a small-scale trial, we may be able to host that data for you.
