I'm not sure how far we'll get with GEPIR and GS1net. They have been
designed with supplier/retailer in mind. GEPIR will let you look up the
company linked to a GS1 barcode number. Then you establish a
relationship and use GS1net as the specialised data synchronisation
catalogue e.g. http://www.gs1nz.org/Foodstuffs.aspx
That's not to say that they couldn't be modified :) I had a talk with
Peter Stephens and Gary Hartley at GS1 HQ in Wellington the other day.
They are open to a discussion about using GS1 barcodes more widely.
There will need to be some good reasons -- remember that GS1 is funded
by members, who are suppliers and retailers. Both suppliers and
retailers have some reservations about making it easy for consumers to
use barcodes:
Retailers - "it could allow consumers to compare prices in shops around
them"
Suppliers - "it could allow third parties to offer bad feedback on my
products"

GS1 Global is organising a MobileCom day,
http://www.gs1.org/mobilecomday2010. GS1 New Zealand will be having a
breakfast (7.30 - 9.30) at AUckland University.
So is there any interest in a barcamp on the topic?
I could pull together a couple of speakers to highlight the issues, and
then we could have some workshops to agree what needs to be done.
