2 saturdays ago I attended Digital NZ's "hacktest".
i blogged about it http://coffee.geek.nz/what-i-did-last-weekend.html

It was very productive day - i'm keen for more these in Wellington -
especially if i'm not the one organising them (so i'd actually have
time to do some hacking myself) but i'm willing to volunteer to help
too.

There's a good number of APIs on the opengovt website already - some
hackfests on those would be a great starter.

In carrying on from Brenda's post....

I’ve been approached at CCANZ by a potential funding source who would like to
see a Creative Commons NZ “hackday” in Wellington. I think it could be a great
way to further look at how to encourage reuse of CC govt data as we’re working
on and anticipating some promising changes on the way for Crown Copyright.
Would anyone be interested in the offering thoughts about whether this would be
a useful event for your community and how best to go about it?

Whats CCANZ?  Top hit on Google is Cement & Concrete Association of New
Zealand

The hackday should have a theme.  Like the Transitcamp that Tara Hunt spoke
about looked at fixing public transport timetables, routing.

It's a shame we missed Fielddays this year, because a Fielddays Farming
FOOCamp could have demonstrated the economic value in a way relevant to NZ.

There is a possible event coming up in late July (it is still being
planned) that is going to be based around Sahana and disaster
management. Might be a good opportunity to look at how we can package
up data into Sahana for local and central govt use.

The planning is still underway for this event, and there is nothing
public yet, but it would be a good theme based approach.

I'm biased of course ;)

Touche.

CCANZ stands for Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand. The work we have
been involved with in regards to PSI and other Govt data has been very
general in terms of aims to create "innovation from open access". I'll
enquire about what specific theme in this area might be preferable from govt
end but I guess any suggestions thrown out here would be a bonus.

As a way of explanation for this vague approach: We are based in the
humanities (non-geeks but would like to be), and while we're committed to
keeping abreast of developments in the ICT sector, I'd like to build up more
of a dialogue between CCANZ and ICT specialists since it's vital to the
development of CCANZ and our support of your work.

Definitely a useful event!  I'd love to see a CC-data hackday, and I'm
sure the folks on this list would be happy to help.  I'll put my hand
up for as much assistance as I can give from the US.  (I go away for
three months and all the exciting stuff starts happening!)

Here's roughly what planning a hackfest looks like:
  - you'll need a venue with free wifi and ample powerpoints
  - supply nibbles, lunch, perhaps even dinner, so people don't have
leave
  - give a few weeks' warning so we can clear schedules, figure out
what we might hack up, etc.
  - we can spread the word through Digital New Zealand, NZ Open Source
mailing list, the e-government Bar Camp list, Webstock mailing list,
and similar groups
  - set up a page on the opengovt.wikia.com wiki so people know who's
coming, and post a list of the CC data sources (Glen can probably whip
that up)
  - have the owners of some of the data there so we can ask questions
("what does this mean", "how do I get X from this?", etc.)

Oi, Mark Harris - can we combine this with the codesprint idea that came out of
Govis this year?

Because if so, I (I'm from National Library, where the hackfest Brenda mentions
at the start of the post) can make enquiries here about hosting the event.

That room can take 20-ish people pretty comfortably. We have a great big
auditorium for people who want to make speeches and - depending what day we do
this - a lot of breakout space.

We have Free Net, which held up for the DigitalNZ hackfest, and some small
experience now in running these things. If we could add the DigitalNZ API into
the mix of things for people to play with, that would be great.

We might need a small cover charge to help out with the food & drinks cost, if
we can't get some sponsorship.

I can't code for toffee. But I can run round and organise things.

Let me know if you want me to start talking to people here. I'll need some
details - like "the point of this hackday is to..." - to help me get the
necessary people onboard. (Nat, a good word from you wouldn't go amiss either)
